What is the best AI anime generator in 2026?

Pick one that redraws your face, not one that filters your photo. We tested three anime styles on four people and fixed what we found.

One of the best AI anime generators in 2026 for turning your own photo into anime is N33: add one photo, pick Shojo, Shonen or Anime portrait, and get four takes. After a fix our test called for, all 48 test pictures came out as drawn anime faces that still look like the person.

A note before the comparison: we make one of these tools, and it is the only one we tested ourselves. For the others, every claim below comes from their own pages, linked where it appears and checked the day this guide went live.

What we measured ourselves
2026-10-30 → 2026-10-30
48 of 48pictures drawn as anime with the person still recognisable, three styles on four portraits, after our fix

Four portraits of adults: a woman with long straight hair, a woman with coily hair, a man with wavy hair and a man with short straight hair. Each got the tool's three styles, Shojo, Shonen and Anime portrait: 12 runs of 50 to 70 seconds, four pictures each. In the first run Shonen came out as anime in 16 of 16, but Shojo returned the photo with a few sparkles in 15 of 15 and Anime portrait often kept a photographic face. We rewrote the prompt the same day. After the fix every face in all 48 pictures was drawn as anime and kept the person's face shape, hair and skin tone; 2 of 48 had a framing flaw, a white margin or black bars.

The same photo in the Shojo style: our first prompt returned it almost untouched; the fixed one draws her as anime with the same hair, sweater and kitchen.

What makes a good AI anime generator from a photo?

It redraws you, not just the background: anime eyes, line art and cel shading on your own face, while your face shape, hair, skin tone and clothes stay yours. A filter over a photo is not anime.
Two of the four people in all three styles after the fix, one take per run: the same face, hair and clothes, drawn.
The other two: coily hair stays coily and stubble stays, drawn in anime line work.

Which anime style should you pick?

Shojo for a soft pastel look, Shonen for an action frame with speed lines and energy, Anime portrait for a calm head-and-shoulders picture against a painted sky. Shonen changes the pose most; the other two keep it.
What went wrong: before the fix Shojo kept the photo; after it, 2 of 48 pictures had a framing flaw.

Which AI anime generators are free in 2026?

Most let you start free. CapCut gives 10 free uses a day, Media.io says its photo converter is 100% free, and Fotor runs on daily free credits. Ours is free to start and uses a little energy per try.

Can you make anime from text instead of a photo?

Yes, but you get an invented character, not yourself. Describe the character, the outfit and the anime style in our Nano Banana image generator. To turn yourself into anime, start from a photo.

How do you get the best anime picture of yourself?

Use one sharp, front-facing photo of an adult in daylight with the face clear and no filter. Try two styles on the same photo, then keep the take whose eyes, hair and outline still read as you.

To try it, open our AI anime generator and start from one of its example photos. For an animated film, clay or toy version of yourself, see our test of the best free AI cartoon generator, and for an avatar, the AI PFP maker.

Questions and answers

Is there a free AI anime generator?

Yes. Ours is free to start with no subscription, CapCut gives 10 free uses a day, and Media.io says its photo converter is free.

Will the anime picture still look like me?

It should. In our test all 48 pictures kept the face shape, hair, skin tone and clothes, drawn in the style you pick.

Why does my anime picture still look like a photo?

Some tools only filter the photo. Ours did that in the Shojo style until our fix; if a take still looks photographic, run it again or try Shonen.

Can I turn a photo of my child into anime?

Not on ours: every photo goes through an age check, and a photo that shows a child or a teenager is refused.

What happens to the photo I upload?

On ours, it is used only for the run and deleted when the run ends; the pictures stay in your Generations until you delete them.
