One selfie in, an 80s or 90s yearbook portrait of you out, plus five more decades. We tested seven eras on four people and share the prompts.

To do the AI yearbook trend for free, add one selfie to our AI filter, open the Eras tab, pick the 80s or 90s yearbook and get four portraits of yourself in a couple of minutes. We ran all seven eras on four people, fixed what the test found, and share the exact prompts.

A note before the comparison: we make one of these tools, and it is the only one we tested ourselves. For the others, every claim below comes from their own pages, linked where it appears and checked the day this guide went live.

What we measured ourselves
2026-11-04 → 2026-11-04
150 of 150test pictures that kept the person's face, skin tone and age, seven era looks on four selfies

Four selfies of adults: a woman with long straight hair, a woman with coily hair, a man with wavy hair and stubble, and a man with short straight hair. Each got all seven eras: 28 runs of 91 to 141 seconds, four pictures each, 112 returned, then 38 more in a retest. Every picture kept the face, the skin tone and the age; the hair, clothes and set change by design. Three faults in the first run: the 80s neon look put eyeshadow and lipstick on the men in 5 of 8, the Y2K look dressed them in hair clips and crop tops in 6 of 8, and one arcade jacket carried a sportswear logo. We changed those three prompts the same day and ran them again, 10 runs (two did not start, a provider error): the man in 80s neon with a clean face in 4 of 4, both men in Y2K styled for a man in 8 of 8, no logo on 12 arcade jackets; one Y2K picture spelled the word in balloons behind the woman.

What is the AI yearbook trend?

It is a school yearbook portrait of you from the 80s or the 90s, made by AI from one selfie: the big feathered hair or the curtained cut, the sweater with the collar, the mottled blue studio backdrop and the faded colour of an old print.
Four selfies as 80s and 90s yearbook portraits: the faces stay theirs, the decade changes everything else.

How do you make an AI yearbook photo for free?

Add one clear, front-facing selfie, open the Eras tab and pick the 80s or the 90s yearbook. You get four portraits per try. Ours keeps your face, skin tone and age and changes the hair, the clothes and the backdrop to the decade.

Which other decades can an AI filter do?

Besides the two yearbooks: an 80s neon party, an 80s video arcade, 70s disco under a mirror ball, a 1920s sepia portrait in an Art Deco ballroom, and Y2K with the hard flash of an early digital camera. Each one changes the hair and the film look too.
The other five eras: hair, clothes, set and film change, the faces and the ages do not.

Which AI yearbook prompts work?

Name the decade, the hair, the clothes, the backdrop and the film, and tell the model to keep your face and age exactly. Each picture below has a Copy prompt button with the exact prompt our tool sends, run on Nano Banana, the Google image model.
A woman with a big 80s curly style in a pink patterned sweater on a mottled backdrop
80s yearbook: big hair, a sweater with a collar.
A man with long straight hair in a red flannel shirt on a bright blue backdrop
90s yearbook: flannel, a turtleneck, a bright backdrop.
A woman with big teased hair and bright makeup in a neon-lit 80s jacket
80s neon: laser grid and a loud jacket.
A man in a plain track jacket among arcade cabinets
80s arcade: no logos after our fix.
A man with feathered hair in a shiny 70s shirt under a mirror ball
70s disco: a wide collar and coloured light.
A woman with a finger-waved bob in a beaded dress in a sepia ballroom
1920s: sepia, soft focus, Art Deco.
A man with spiky gelled hair in a plain zip jacket in front of a silver backdrop
Y2K: early digital flash, styled for him after our fix.
What went wrong: makeup and women's Y2K styling on the men; both fixed the same day.

Which AI yearbook generators are free?

Few are free all the way. Aragon lets you preview its yearbook styles with free credits and charges for a full album, Fotor gives new users free credits and charges credits for HD downloads, and ours is free to start with a little energy per try.

How do you get a yearbook photo that looks like you?

Use one sharp, front-facing selfie of yourself alone, in daylight, with your face clear and no filter. If you wear glasses, keep them on. Try both yearbooks: the big 80s hair suits some faces, the sleek 90s cut suits others.

To try it, open our AI filter and start from one of its example photos. To see yourself older instead, read how realistic an AI age filter is, and for a holiday version of the same selfie, how to do the AI Christmas photo trend.

Questions and answers

Is there a free AI yearbook generator?

Ours is free to start with no subscription. Aragon and Fotor let you try with free credits, and charge for the full album or HD downloads.

How many selfies do I need for AI yearbook photos?

On ours, one. Some services ask for several selfies from different angles to train on your face first.

Will the yearbook photo still look like me?

It should. In our test every picture kept the face, the skin tone and the age; the hair and clothes change to the decade.

What is the difference between the 80s and 90s yearbook looks?

The 80s look has big feathered or permed hair, bold makeup and a collared sweater on a grey-blue backdrop; the 90s look has curtained or sleek hair, flannel and a bright blue backdrop.

What happens to the selfie I upload?

On ours, it is used only for the run and deleted when the run ends; the pictures stay in your Generations until you delete them.
