What is the best AI photo editor in 2026?

Pick by the model behind the edit, not the app. In our test one free model kept every photo, one missed the lighting fix, and one redrew each picture.

One of the best free AI photo editors in 2026 is N33: upload a photo, type what to change, and pick the model that does it. That choice matters more than the app. We ran six everyday edits on our three free models, and one kept the photo every time, one missed a single kind of edit, and one redrew the whole picture instead of editing it. Here is what each did, and how the big editors compare.

A note before the comparison: we make one of these tools, and it is the only one we tested ourselves. For the others, every price and promise below comes from their own pages, linked where it appears and checked the day this guide went live.

What we measured ourselves
2026-10-26 → 2026-10-26
25 of 35edits that looked natural and kept the person and the photo, six edits on three free models

Six edits, written as the quick prompts on our photo editor page: remove the people in the background, restore a 1962 wedding print, put a person on a beach at golden hour, change her hoodie for a navy coat, fix the light on a man in a dim kitchen, and add a plant to that kitchen. Nano Banana returned 23 pictures and 19 passed: every edit but the light, where the face got about 1% brighter. GPT Image passed 6 of 6 and brightened the face by about 12 points out of 100. Grok Imagine made each change but passed 0 of 6: every time it redrew the photo with a new frame, pose or background. Times with our queue: Nano Banana 50 to 60 seconds for four pictures, Grok Imagine 80 to 190 seconds, GPT Image 60 to 450 seconds.

Which AI photo editor gives the most natural results?

In our test, GPT Image: six edits out of six looked real and kept the photo. Nano Banana was as natural on five kinds of edit but barely changed the light. Grok Imagine made each change by redrawing the whole photo, so it looks real but is no longer yours.

Fix the light, by GPT Image: soft even light on his face and detail back in the shadows, the kitchen unchanged. Nano Banana returned the same dim picture.
The two ways an edit fails. Nano Banana left the light almost as it was. Grok Imagine made the change but drew a new photo around it: a closer frame and another kitchen, another café behind her.

What can you edit in a photo with AI?

Most everyday edits work by typing them: remove people, change the background, swap an outfit, restore an old print, add an object. Name what changes and list what must stay, such as the face, pose and background.
Two more edits by Nano Banana: the people behind him removed with the pier filled in, and an old print repaired and lightly coloured, faces kept.

Which AI photo editors are worth trying in 2026?

Adobe Firefly, Fotor, Pixlr and CapCut all let you edit by typing, and all start free. Picsart and Pixlr sell monthly plans for more AI use. The difference is which model does the edit, and whether you can pick it.

How do you choose an AI photo editor?

Check four things: does it keep your face and the rest of the photo, can you pick the model for the job, is there a watermark on free exports, and what happens to the photos you upload.

The edit instruction does half the work. Say what changes and what stays: "change the outfit to a navy coat, keep the face, hair, pose and background exactly the same". If one model leaves the picture almost as it was, as Nano Banana did with the light, run the same line on another model rather than rewording it five times. Our editor runs only safe-for-work edits, so it is not the tool for "no restrictions" requests.

To try it, open our AI photo editor and start from one of its quick prompts. For ideas to type, see our AI photo editing prompts, and for a professional profile photo from a selfie, the AI headshot generator.

Questions and answers

Is there a free online AI photo editor?

Yes. Ours is free to start with no subscription, Adobe Firefly gives free daily generations, and CapCut says its online editor is free.

Will an AI photo editor change my face?

It can. Ask it to keep the face, hair and pose exactly the same, and compare before you save. In our test one model redrew the whole photo every time.

Can AI restore an old photo?

Yes. Scan or photograph the print flat, then ask for the scratches, creases and fading to be fixed and every face kept as it is.

Which photo editors use AI technology?

Most of the big ones now: Adobe Firefly, Picsart, Pixlr, Fotor and CapCut all have an editor you can type instructions into.

How do I write an edit that works?

One change per sentence, then what must stay. If a model barely changes the picture, try the same line on another model.
