What is the best free AI hairstyle changer in 2026?

Pick one that keeps your face and your own hair texture. We tried 24 cuts on four people and found, then fixed, a curl problem in our own tool.

One of the best free AI hairstyle changers in 2026 is N33: add a selfie, pick a cut, and see four takes of it on your own face in about a minute. We ran its six cuts on four people. 88 of 90 pictures kept the person and the pose, and the test caught a flaw we fixed the same day: coily hair came back straight.

A note before the comparison: we make one of these tools, and it is the only one we tested ourselves. For the others, every claim below comes from their own pages, linked where it appears and checked the day this guide went live.

What we measured ourselves

88 of 90pictures that kept the person and the pose, six cuts on four portraits, after our fix

Four portraits: a woman with long straight hair, a woman with shoulder-length coily hair, a man with wavy hair and a man with short straight hair. Each got the tool's six cuts (bob, curtain bangs, long layers, pixie, wolf cut, slick back): 24 runs of 40 to 91 seconds and 90 pictures, as some runs return fewer than four. Every cut was recognisable. Straight and wavy hair kept its texture in 66 of 66 pictures. Coily hair kept its curls in 15 of 20, slick back left out as it is combed flat by design; in the first run, before we changed the prompt, that was 2 of 20. The two misses: glasses appeared on one picture, and one turned the head.

The same bob on the same coily-haired portrait: our first prompt straightened it, the fixed one keeps her curls and changes only the length and shape.

Does an AI hairstyle changer work on curly hair?

Test it on your own photo first. Our six cuts straightened a coily-haired portrait in 18 of 20 pictures, because the prompt never said to keep texture and the bob asked for sleek hair. After the fix, 15 of 20 keep the curls.

Slick back is left out: it combs the hair flat by design. The fix went live before this guide.

Three of her cuts after the fix: new length and shape, her own curls, the same face and park.
Six of the 90 pictures, first take of each run: the cut changes, the face, clothes and street stay.
What still goes wrong after the fix: some coily bobs and pixies come back straight, and once each a take added glasses or turned the head. That is why you get four takes.

Can you try a haircut that is not in the list?

Yes: type it in our AI photo editor and pick a model. We typed six cuts or colours per person: GPT Image matched 22 of 24 and Nano Banana 21 of 24, and both drew braids, an afro and a puff in her own texture.

43 of 48typed haircut and colour edits that matched the words, six per portrait on four portraits

The same four portraits, six edits each, the same words on both models, every one ending with "keep the face, expression, clothes, pose and background exactly the same": for her a pixie, bob, wolf cut, curtain bangs, curls and copper red; for the coily-haired portrait a tapered cut, box braids, a sleek bob, an afro, an afro puff and honey blonde; for the men a fade, buzz cut, long hair, man bun, a slicked or two-block cut and a new colour. Both models kept the face in 48 of 48 and drew all six coily-hair edits right. GPT Image matched 22 of 24: both buzz cuts came out as short crops. Nano Banana matched 21 of 24: curtain bangs became a straight fringe, shoulder-length hair stopped at the jaw, and the man bun sat out of sight behind his head. We counted the first picture of each run.

Which AI hairstyle changers are free in 2026?

Most start free with a catch. Fotor gives new users credits, AI Ease daily credits after sign-up, and YouCam is a free app. VisualGPT says no sign-up; ImagineArt needs no card for basic use. Ours is free to start and uses a little energy per try.

AI Ease's page says both that it sets no limits and that the free option tries one hairstyle; Fotor charges credits for every change.

Is there an AI hairstyle changer for men?

Yes; the cuts are not tied to gender. In our test slick back, wolf cut and long layers read well on men, and our buzz cut filter covers clipper cuts from a short buzz to a skin fade.

How do you get a realistic result?

Use a sharp, front-facing selfie in daylight with your hair down and visible to the ends, and no hat or filter. Then compare the takes side by side and keep the one whose hairline and texture look like yours.

When you type a cut, name the length, the shape and your texture: "a chin-length bob in my natural curls" leaves less to guess than "a bob". Treat the result as a preview to show your stylist, not a promise: your hair's thickness and the way it grows decide the real cut.

To try it, open our AI hairstyle changer and start from one of its example selfies. To keep your cut and change only the colour, use the hair color changer.

Questions and answers

Is there a free AI hairstyle changer?

Yes. Ours is free to start with no subscription, VisualGPT says it is free with no sign-up, and Fotor gives new users free credits.

Will an AI hairstyle changer keep my curls?

It should, but check. Ours straightened coily hair until a fix we made during this test; now most takes keep the curls. For braids, an afro or a puff, type the style in the photo editor.

Will my face change?

It should not. In our test the person and the pose stayed in all but two pictures: one added glasses and one turned the head. Pick the take closest to you.

Can men use an AI hairstyle changer?

Yes. The same cuts work on any face, and for fades and buzz cuts there is a separate clipper tab.

How realistic is an AI haircut preview?

The cut, length and shape carry over well. Your real hair's thickness and the way it grows can still make the salon result differ.
