We added a photo of a man on a city court and pressed Shonen. His twists, beard, red jersey and ball came through; the soft afternoon light became hard cel shadows and speed lines.

Can AI make anime art from text?

Yes. Leave the photo out and describe the scene, the look and the light. Every picture here came from the prompt on its card.

A 1990s style anime frame of a tiny ramen stall at night in the rain, an old cook ladling broth for a tired office worker

Ramen stall in the rain

An anime illustration in 1990s cel style, portrait 4:5: a tiny ramen stall at night in the rain, steam rising from two bowls, an old cook in a white headband ladling broth, a tired office worker in a loosened tie sitting at the counter. Warm yellow light from a paper lantern against cold blue rain, thick outlines, slightly muted colors, soft film grain. Exactly two people. The lantern and the curtains are blank. No text, no watermark.

A shonen anime action scene of a courier in a red jacket leaping between rooftops at sunset with a parcel under his arm

Rooftop courier

A shonen anime action illustration, portrait 4:5: a young courier in a red jacket leaps between two city rooftops at sunset with a parcel under his arm, scarf trailing, one sneaker reaching for the next ledge. The street far below, laundry lines and water tanks around him, bold ink outlines, hard cel shading, dramatic speed lines, orange and violet sky. Exactly one person. No text, no watermark.

A soft painted anime still of an old woman watering blue hydrangeas outside a flower shop on a hillside street above the sea

Hillside flower shop

A soft hand-painted anime film still, portrait 4:5: a small flower shop on a steep hillside street in the morning, an old woman in a straw sun hat watering buckets of blue hydrangeas outside, a ginger cat asleep on the step, the sea far below between rooftops. Gentle watercolor background, warm natural light, clean simple character lines, calm pastel colors. Exactly one person. The shop sign is blank. No text, no watermark.

A cyberpunk anime scene of a pilot on a gantry looking up at a giant grey and orange robot in a neon-lit hangar

Pilot and her robot

A cyberpunk anime illustration, portrait 4:5: a pilot in a white and orange flight suit with a helmet under her arm stands on a steel gantry, looking up at a giant grey and orange robot in a hangar. Neon pink and cyan light, sparks from a welder far below, steam, sharp cel shading, dark night palette. Exactly one person. Every panel and sign is blank. No text, no watermark.

Three chibi friends having a picnic of rice balls and strawberries under a blossoming tree

Chibi picnic

A chibi anime illustration, portrait 4:5: three adult friends with big heads and tiny bodies having a picnic under a blossoming tree, rice balls, a thermos and strawberries on a checkered blanket, one pouring tea, one laughing, one taking a photo with a phone. Round shiny eyes, simple clean lines, bright flat pastel colors, a soft blue sky. Exactly three people. No text, no watermark.

A black and white manga panel of two swordsmen facing each other on a snowy mountain pass

Manga duel in the snow

A black and white manga panel, portrait 4:5: two swordsmen face each other on a narrow mountain pass in falling snow, one in a torn straw hat with his hand on the hilt, the other in a dark cloak with his blade drawn low, pine trees bent by the wind. Crisp ink lines, screentone shading, strong black and white contrast. Exactly two people. No speech bubbles, no panel borders, no text, no watermark.

How to turn a photo into anime

Three steps, and the last one repeats as often as you like.

1
Add your photo

Press + Photo and pick a clear JPG or PNG where your face is well lit.

The same man and his guitar drawn as a clean modern anime illustration
2
Pick a look

Press a look under the box, or describe your own, like clean modern anime, and send.

3
Change the scene

Add the anime picture as your new photo and ask for the next change, like a rainy evening.

Which anime look fits your photo?

Pick by what the photo is for. Shonen and cyberpunk suit a strong pose, shojo and soft watercolor a calm portrait, chibi a funny gift or a pet, and 90s cel a picture that should feel like an old series. The last column is what to add to your own prompt.

What is an AI anime generator?

An AI anime generator draws a picture in the style of Japanese animation from a photo, a written description, or both. Ours sends your words and your photo to Nano Banana or Flux Kontext and returns the anime version, keeping the face, hair and clothes you started with.

It is part of the same free AI image generator, so it runs in the browser on a phone or a computer with nothing to install. You need a free account to send, and every result is kept in Generations. Want a whole original character with a name and a backstory? The AI character generator makes one.

What people use it for

  • Profile picturesAn anime version of the photo you already use.
  • GiftsA friend, a couple or a family in chibi or shojo.
  • Scenes from textA moment from your own story, drawn as an anime still.
  • PetsYour dog or cat next to you, in the same look.

Will my anime version still look like me?

Mostly. The hairstyle, hair color, skin tone, glasses, beard and clothes carry over well, because each look's prompt asks for them by name. The face is redrawn in the look's rules, so shojo eyes grow and chibi shrinks everything but the head.

It is a new drawing, not a filter on your pixels, so small things can drift: an earring, a hand, a logo. If something moved, name it in your next instruction or pick another of the pictures from the same try.

Questions about the AI anime generator

What people ask before their first anime picture.

Yes. It is free to start and runs online in your browser. Each try uses a little energy, which refills with a daily bonus and when you share, post or invite friends. There is no subscription to cancel.

Press + Photo, add a clear photo, then press a look under the box (Shonen, Shojo, Chibi, 90s cel, Soft watercolor or Cyberpunk) and send. Each try returns several pictures to choose from.

Yes. Type the scene, the look and the light, for example "a ramen stall at night in the rain, 1990s cel anime". The text-to-anime examples above show prompts that work; copy one and change the subject.

Six looks are one press away: shonen, shojo, chibi, 90s cel, soft watercolor and cyberpunk. You can also describe any other look in your own words, like black and white manga with screentone.

A clear, well-lit JPG or PNG under 10 MB with the face large in the frame. One or two people work best; a pet in the photo usually comes along into the drawing.

Try both on the same photo. For this page, Flux Kontext drew the bolder anime versions (the shojo, chibi and 90s cel examples), and Nano Banana kept more of the photo (shonen, watercolor, cyberpunk). Nano Banana returns four pictures a try, Flux Kontext two.

Before it leaves your browser, your photo is turned into a plain JPEG with location and camera data removed. It is used for your picture, and your results are kept in Generations in your account.

About a minute from pressing send to the finished pictures, sometimes a little more when the queue is busy. You can keep editing the result straight away.
