Is Grok free in 2026?
Yes for text, and no longer for everything. Chatting with Grok costs nothing, but image generation on X moved behind a paid subscription in January 2026.
We can be unusually precise about the question behind that sentence, because we own a page that answers it. Between May 2025 and September 2026, 14,777 people reached it from Google search, and Search Console recorded the exact words they typed. Half of the twenty biggest queries name the paid tier — “premium”, “subscription”, “account” — which tells you what people are really asking: not what Grok can do, but how to get in without paying.
The wall went up in one specific place. On January 9, 2026, X restricted Grok's image generation to paying subscribers after the tool drew international criticism; five days later xAI blocked sexualized images of real people outright. Text chat was never part of that change, and still is not.
The same page collected 59,875 impressions over the period, and ten of its twenty highest-clicking queries contain the words premium, subscription or account.

Which Grok do you get when you don't pay?
xAI's own model list currently names Grok 4.7 as its most capable, alongside 4.6 and 4.5 at a 500k-token context and 4.3 at a million. Those are the sizes a paid tier or the API buys you.
The 4.6 and 4.7 sizes sit on the paid rungs. A free tier that quietly answered with the flagship would not survive the invoice, ours included.
We are explicit about our own version of this, because the alternative is pretending: the free rung in our chat runs Grok 4.5, the cheapest size on our account, while 4.6 and 4.7 sit on the paid rungs.
Can you use Grok without an X account?
“grok without login” brought us 200 clicks at an average position of 5.5, which is a small number with a clear meaning: a measurable share of people want the model without an account on a social network. That is the case our own product answers — you can put Grok, Claude and Gemini in one window and start with a daily free claim of 10 energy plus a one-time 50 on signup, without a card.
If the comparison matters more than the brand, the same question is worth asking of the others: what Claude's free plan allows, and how much Gemini gives away, are different answers with different limits.
What we cannot tell you: the exact message limit
Every listicle quotes a number — ten messages every two hours, twenty a day, thirty per window — and they disagree with each other because they are copying each other across different years. We could not find a current free-tier message limit published by xAI itself, and a number nobody stands behind is worse than no number.
What is safe to say: the free tier is metered on a rolling window rather than a daily reset, so spreading questions through the day gets you further than firing a dozen in one session. If the exact ceiling matters to your work, measure it on your own account on the day you need it — that is the only figure that will be true.

Will Grok stay free?
Nobody at xAI has promised that. Every expansion of free access so far was announced as temporary, and the image tools have already moved behind a subscription.
Do you need X Premium for Grok?
Not for text. You do for generating images inside X, which has been subscriber-only since January 9, 2026.
What is the catch with free Grok?
Unpublished limits and a smaller model. Neither shows up until you hit them, which is why the honest answer to “how many messages” is to measure your own.
Is free Grok good enough for real work?
For short questions, yes. For long documents and hard reasoning, the gap between a 4.5 and a 4.7 is the whole reason the paid tiers exist.
