Is Grok free in 2026?

So is Grok free in September 2026? The free tier is still there: xAI's own FAQ says free users keep "Grok's free tier limits on Chat and Voice", which reset on their own schedule. We can be unusually precise about what people mean when they ask it, because we own a page that answers it. Between May 2025 and September 2026, 14,777 people reached it from Google search, and Search Console recorded the exact words they typed. Half of the twenty biggest queries name the paid tier: "premium", "subscription", "account". That tells you what people are really asking. Not what Grok can do, but how to get in without paying.

Images are where the free line moved first. On January 9, 2026, X restricted Grok's image generation on X to paying subscribers after the tool drew international criticism, and at the time the standalone Grok app was not covered by that change. Five days later xAI limited Grok's ability to create sexualized images of real people on X. Text chat was never part of either change.

So the answer to "supergrok free" is no: SuperGrok is the paid layer on top of free Grok. For people who keep running out, xAI's FAQ points to upgrading the plan or buying top ups, not to a free version of SuperGrok.

According to xAI's FAQ, the change that rolled out in June 2026 replaced "separate daily limits for each product (like Chat, Imagine, Voice, or Build)" with "one shared weekly usage pool" for paid users, and the reset time is shown in the Usage tab in Settings. The same page says free users keep "Grok's free tier limits on Chat and Voice", which are separate from that pool and reset on their own schedule.

Many guides still quote a free message count, such as ten messages every two hours or twenty a day, and they disagree with each other because they copy each other from different points in time. We could not find a current free-tier message limit published by xAI itself, and a number nobody stands behind is worse than no number.

What is safe to say: if the exact ceiling matters to your work, measure it on your own account on the day you need it. That is the only figure that will be true. On a paid plan, the Usage tab in Settings shows how much of the weekly pool is used and when it resets.

xAI released Grok 4.5 in July 2026, then Grok 4.6 on August 12, 2026, built with "a particular focus on long-running agents and more ambitious interactive and visual work". Grok 4.7 followed on September 21, 2026, and xAI's model list now calls it "the most capable model we've built". All three have a 500k-token context window and API prices from $2 per million input tokens.
